Priya Parker cites On Repentance and Repair as the second of two books most influential to The Art of Fighting. She credits Danya Ruttenberg's argument that Western culture over-indexes on the Christian notion of forgiveness — placing too much weight on victims to forgive quickly — while under-emphasising the Jewish concept of repair. Parker notes Ruttenberg draws on Maimonides' five-stage repair process, in which the person who caused harm must first acknowledge what they did rather than ask for forgiveness.
