Spirit and Sacrament

CNLP 815 | The Death of Secularism: Matt Chandler on Why Pastors Shouldn't Wear Capes and When the Church Is All Wood and No Fire

The Carey Nieuwhof Leadership Podcast, 7 July 2026. The book comes up at 47 min 50 sec in.

Matt Chandler mentions Andrew Wilson's book while describing how the Village Church is adding liturgical prayers of confession to its services. He recalls Wilson's argument that Spirit and sacrament must coexist in local church life rather than one being traded for the other, and his trampoline illustration: going low in confession and repentance propels worshippers higher in praise and rejoicing. Matt says he needs to go back and revisit it, and acknowledges some uncertainty about the exact title.
